Big Magic

This!

This book is the reason I’m writing anything here at all again.

This book helped me to see that we are all creative beings, just by virtue of being human.

This book showed me that ideas are fleeting and need to be created. If it’s meant to be something you bring to the world, you need to act swiftly and intentionally, else it will leave you to find someone who takes the idea seriously and will bring it to fruition.

This book gave me permission to just do it; to write the musings in my head. To put some helpful ideas out there. To more fully live my mission, one small step at a time.

That mission, for the record, is using technology to support people in achieving their goals, with integrity and purpose.

My mission is not to be an artist, an author, a musician, or other pursuits traditionally thought of as “creative”. Yet I love this book and the message it brings.

Big Magic is a book filled with musings and nudges from Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of Eat, Pray, Love. She has had phenomenal success which started with many rejections while she persisted and kept taking steps forward.

Sure, it’s easy to approach creativity with a playful, light attitude once you’ve reached the top. She helped me to see that you only get there by not taking yourself or your work too seriously, detaching from the outcome, and continuing to move forward with a spark of fire in your eye.

This data-driven, analytical, scientifically-trained business strategist can now see her ideas in a new light, and that light is full of bravery and gumption to just take the next step. To share an idea for the one person who needs to see it. To find inspiration and take action on it, where there once might have been a “who am I to do that” thought.

If you think you are creative but something is keeping you stuck, or even better, if you don’t think you are creative (like me) and need to realize that WE ALL ARE CREATIVE in our own special way, you really need to read this book. I hope it helps you to unleash the creativity that is inside of you. I, for one, would love to see it!
